Depending on their stage of developement the ascomata can resemble either apothecia or perithecia, +/- immersed becoming slightly superficial. The asci are multi-spored with 16-32 spores in spirals. Spores hyaline, acicular, 1-septate, 22-31 x 1-2.5 µm. Micrographs below.

Recorded from thalli and apothecia of many genera, including Lecanora, Ochrolechia, Parmelina, Pertusaria and Rinodina etc

Related: Spirographa ciliata s.lat is also recorded from many hosts but has Y-shaped conidia with 2 divergent branches. S. pyramidalis has triangular or tetrahedral conidia, without appendages
