Species: Xylographa parallela Photos: Carrons, Co. Limerick, Ireland. The inconspicuous thallus is formed of hyphae immersed in the substrate, appearing as a whitish or greyish stain that is sometimes dotted with small brownish goniocysts. Apothecia are narrowly ellipsoid to linear, 1-2.5 x 0.2-0.3 µm, parellel to each other and following the wood grain. Initially slightly convex and brownish then black, leaving a greyish scar when they disappear. Asci 8-spored, spores simple, 11-16 x 5-8 µm. Chemistry K+/- yellow, P+/- yellow Found on hardwood fences and poles and on decorticated trees, especially conifers Similar: X. trunciseda apothecia remain brown when mature |
