Growth type crustose

Thick and often irregularly cracked, pale grey or grey-green thallus. Apothecia with thick margins, the discs dark brown to black. Asci are 8-spored, the spores brown, 1-septate, 14-22 x 8-12 µm with rounded locules. Micrograph below. Chemical results: K+ yellow

Occurs on the well-lit bark of Oak, Ash and Beech, often on old, rough-barked, boundary trees. Infrequent in Ireland but possibly overlooked.
