Whitish to pale grey thallus, sometimes with black prothallus. Apothecia reddish brown with swollen margin that becomes undulate and distorted. Older apothecia become much larger in size. Margins appear slightly powdery with protruding hyphae as cortex is lacking. Spores 11.5-18 x 5-8 µm. Margins lack large crystals but epithecium contains yellow granules dissolving in K. Chemistry: Thallus K+ yellw, C-. Exciple PD+ deep yellow or orange, UV+ pale orange or yellow

Widespread but scarce on smooth-barked deciduous trees.

Similar: L. argentata. Crystals in margins, no granules in epithecium
