Species: Cladonia squamosa s. lat Photos: On mossy rock, upland field. Ballingeary, Cork, SW Ireland. Incised basal squamules not persisting. Erect podetia with peeling squamules and bare, decorticate areas, brown apothecia. Podetia ending in pointed tips or narrow cups with digitate projections on margins. Apices open. Soredia absent. Very variable. Common throughout Ireland on rotting wood and acidic peaty soils. There are two chemotypes: Chemotype A: K-, Pd-, UV+ vivid white. Chemotype B: (Cladonia squamosa subsp. subsquamosa) is K+ yellow-orange, P+ orange, UV- Similar: Cladonia bellidiflora, red apothecia, KC+ yellow |
