Irish lichens

Species: Parmeliopsis ambigua

Growth type foliose.
Photos: On ornamental Prunus. Ballineen, Cork, SW Ireland.

Thallus to 4cm diameter with flat, adpressed lobes, yellow-grey or greenish when wet. Lobe tips and centre of thallus become covered with powdery soredia. Underside black in centre with simple rhizines, light brown at the lobe tips without rhizines. Apothecia rare.

Occurs on acid-barked trees, wood, rocks. Declining due to lower SO2 levels.
Cortex: K+ very pale yellow, KC +/- yellow. Medulla: UV+ white
