Species: Phaeographis lyellii Photos: Commeen West, Co. Cork, SW Ireland. Thallus thin and waxy, yellowish-green to dark olive, the raised, flat apothecia unbranched, branched or stellate. The discs are black with white powdery margins and the exiple is entire. Asci 8-spored, the spores (3-)5(-7) septate, (20-)24-35 x 7-9 µm. Micrographs below. Chemistry negative On +/- shaded smooth bark of deciduous trees and saplings, usually in old woodlands. Rare on wayside trees but colonising young Beech plantations near the south Irish coast. Similar: Phaeographis inusta, apothecia without white thalline margins, spores 3-5 septate, 16-25 × 7-9 µm |
