Usnea ceratina

Family: Parmeliaceae

Species: Usnea ceratina

Photos: Young thallus, Killarney NP, Co. Kerry, SW Ireland.

Base not blackened, medulla very compact, pale pinkish to dark pink. Young thallii are shrubby and +/- erect, before becoming pendulous with long, straggling growth to 30-80 cm in length. Branches usually sparse, uniformly thick and not narrowed at base. Scattered or abundant thin fibrils to 1 cm long occur at right-angles to the branches which are coarsely warted with white raised tubercles containing soredia. Apothecia are rare. Thallus C+ yellow-orange, K-, CK+ yellow-orange, Pd-, medulla C+ yellow

Usually found on well-lit, acid-barked trees (particularly Oak and Beech) in old woodland and parks.

Similar: Usnea filipendula is usually more richly branched but small specimens of Usnea ceratina can resemble Usnea cornuta
