Irish lichens Lichenicolous fungi

Muellerella lichenicola

Family: Incertae sedis

Species: Muellerella lichenicola

Lichenicous on Caloplaca cerinella. Photos: Co. Cork, SW Ireland.

Small, black, globose perithecia on host thallus. Asci multi-spored (64-100 spores), spores 1-septate, 5.5-7 x 3-3.5 µm. Pycnidia +/- immersed, conidia hyaline, 3-3.5 x 1-1.5 µm. Micrographs below.

Usually (but not always) lichenicolous and recorded from a number of crustose lichens including Caloplaca, Catillaria, Lecanora, Mycobilimbia, Protoblastenia and Verrucaria species. Seems to most frequently occurs on species on calcareous substrates.

N.B. Many Muellerella identifications (including this one) can only be tentative owing to Muellerella species not appearing to be host-specific and with little molecular data available for the genus
