Thallus of small overlapping squamules, greenish when wet, drying fawn to grey-brown. Black lower surface with pale margin. Margins entire or crenulate, not pruinose. 1-2 conspicuous brownish-black perithecia per squamule, ostioles depressed. Asci (1-)2 spored, the spores multi-septate to muriform, 30-50 x 16-24 µm. Rare on periodically inundated rocks beside streams and loughs, often among mosses. In Ireland only recorded from north Kerry, Connemara and the Burren. Chemical reactions negative.
