Species: Endocarpon adscendens Photos: Among moss on rock. Dromore NNR, the Burren, Ireland. Identification confirmed by Brian Coppins Thallus of small overlapping squamules, greenish when wet, drying fawn to grey-brown. Black lower surface with pale margin. Margins entire or crenulate, not pruinose. 1-2 conspicuous brownish-black perithecia per squamule, ostioles depressed. Asci (1-)2 spored, the spores multi-septate to muriform, 30-50 x 16-24 µm. Pycnidia are frequent. Microscope photograph below. Rare on periodically inundated rocks beside streams and loughs, often among mosses. In Ireland only recorded from north Kerry, Connemara and the Burren. Chemical reactions negative. |
