Dark brown or grey-brown thallus, dense lobes with numerous cylindrical digitate projections on margins. Lower surface strongly ridged. Rarely fertile, apothecia red-brown with isidiate margins.

Occurs among moss on trees, rocks and damp soil in old woodland. Chemical reactions negative

Similar: L. gelatinosum, occurs on more calcareous substrates.
L. pulvinatum, flattened marginal projections.
