Apothecia very rare, concave red-brown discs with smooth or slightly sorediate margins. Common on trees throughout Ireland, also on siliceous rocks. Medulla and soredia: KC+ red, C+ carmine-red, UV- Similar: Punctelia borrei. Under surface black towards centre. Punctelia jeckeri, lobe tips brownish-grey, pruinose.
