Reddish-brown and appearing gall-like before developing into black or blackish-brown, more or less sessile, cup-shaped apothecia. Discs seem grey-pruinose because of hyaline, refractive hairs with recurved ends on the swollen, incurved rims. Asci 8-spored, spores hyaline, simple, 6-7 x 3-4 µm and often with several guttules.

Only found on the thallus of Evernia prunastri.
