Species: Herteliana gagei Photos: On rock. Killarney NP, Co. Kerry, SW Ireland. Identified by John Douglass The thick, smooth, greenish-white to pale blue thallus forms continuous, wide-spreading patches with a +/- distinct black prothallus. The convex apothecia are red-brown, but are often browsed by snails and fail to reach maturity. Spores simple with pointed ends, 18-22 x 8-10 µm. The black cone-like pycnidia are usually numerous. K+ yellow, C-, KC+ yellow, P- Occurs on damp, siliceous rocks in sheltered, mainly oceanic, woodlands. Similar: Lecidea phaeops. P+ yellow with immersed apothecia |
