Thallus usually thick, warted, cracked or areolate, light grey, often with bluish tinge. Prothallus grey when present. Apothecia have black discs with persistent, thin, entire margins. Asci (4-)6-8 spored and the spores are very variable in size and often poorly developed, 14-30 × 7-16 µm. Cortex and medulla: K-, P-

Found on nutrient-rich siliceous rocks, often near water. Inland and coastal distribution and the commonest K- Aspicilia-like species on siliceous rocks
