Species: Cystocoleus ebeneus Photos: On rocks. Gougane Barra, Cork, SW Ireland. Identified by John Douglass Forms small patches of black, felted thallus. Narrow, brittle filaments are surrounded by contorted, nodulose, fungal hyphae. Numerous contorted, spiky or wiry branches. Sterile. Microscopy needed to separate from Racodium rupestre. Occurs on damp, usually upland, rocks and on acidic bark in upland woods. Chemical reactions negative. Also similar: Ephebe lanata |
