Growth type squamulose. Chemical reactions negative.
Photos: On mature Salix. The Gearagh, Cork, SW Ireland.

Forms colonies of small grey-green, blue-green or bluish-grey 'ear-shaped' lobes with raised margins. Clusters of paler soredia form on lobe margins and can spread over the whole thallus. Perithecia are occasional, +/- embedded but strongly projecting on underside of thallus. Asci 8-spored, spores (5-)7 septate, becoming brown

Common among moss on shaded trees, rare on damp, mossy rocks but less frequent in the east of Ireland. Sometimes host to the lichenicolous fungus Capronia normandinae
