Species: Cladonia squamosa Photos: On mossy rock, upland field. Ballingeary, Cork, SW Ireland. Incised basal squamules not persisting. Erect podetia with peeling squamules and bare, decorticate areas, brown apothecia. Podetia ending in pointed tips or narrow cups with digitate projections on margins. Apices open. Soredia absent. Very variable. Common throughout Ireland on rotting wood and acidic peaty soils. Chemical reactions negative, UV+ white C. squamosa subsp. subsquamosa, K+ yellow-orange, P+ orange Similar: Cladonia bellidiflora, red apothecia, KC+ yellow |
