Species: Verrucaria macrostoma f. furfuracea Photos: Church wall. Macroom, Co. Cork, SW Ireland. The thallus is pale to dark brown, areolate or almost squamulose. Very similar to Verrucaria macrostoma but with soredia and blastidia (vegetative propogules) developing on the edges of the areoles. Pycnidia are visible on the surface of the areoles. Occurs throughout Ireland on calcareous rocks, limestone and on mortar. Chemical reactions negative. |
