Growth type crustose.

Variable. Thallus whitish to pale yellow-grey, usually thick, granular-warted with yellowish soredia scattered or forming a continuous crust. Apothecia more frequent on mature specimens, disc pinkish to orange-brown. When occurring on trees the thallus is thinner.

Widespread in upland areas, often over moss on siliceous rocks and acid-barked trees. Thallus K-, C+ red, KC+ orange-red, P-, UV-
